The walls, pillars, ceilings, and sanctuary of the Church of Spilled Blood were designed by more than 30 artists who worked for two decades creating mosaics over 7000 square meters.
They depicted scenes from the Old and New Testments using Byzantine styles of the Russian Orthodox Church.
The iconostasis is a walled barrier between the sanctuary and the altar where icons of Orthodox saints were depicted. In Russian Orhtodox tradition, the priests conduct services behind the iconstasis and come out to bless congregants and dispense incense. |
These pillars are placed on the exact spot where Tsar Alexander II was assasinated in 1881 by a terrorist group, The People's Will. Fresh flowers are placed in the center every morning. |
